1870s-80s Collection of Thomas Hodge Watercolors of Notable St Andrews Golfers
Thomas Hodge (1827-1907) was known as the "Painter of St Andrews." He was the rare early golf painter that actually knew the subjects that he painted.
Thomas Hodge is likely best-known for his small watercolor portraits of notable early St Andrews figures. Offered here is a historic collection of 6 different early St Andrews golfers. This includes 5 members of the Royal & Ancient, including John Whyte-Melville, as well as two-time Amateur Champion John Laidlay.
Each of these watercolor portraits was painted by Thomas Hodge in approximately the 1870s to 1880s. Single Hodge watercolors are desirable, but a collection of 6 (all golfers, and including Whyte-Melville and Laidlay) is remarkable and presents a phenomenal display.
Here are the individuals whose portraits by Thomas Hodge are offered in this collection:
c1887 Portrait of J.E. Laidlay, 2x Amateur Champ (2 1/2" x 4" watercolor)
c1880 John Whyte-Melville, R&A Member, Important early golf figure (5" x 6")
