"Old Tom Morris" by Thomas Hodge, c1880s
Thomas Hodge was known as the "Painter of St Andrews." He was the rare early golf painter that actually knew the subjects that he painted. Hodge famously painted watercolors of notable figures in St Andrews in the 1870s to 1890s.
Offered here is the crown jewel of Hodge portraits - an original 1888 watercolor of the great Old Tom Morris. Thomas Hodge personally knew Old Tom Morris, and of his many portraits of the St Andrews townsfolk, Hodge's portraits of Tom Morris reign supreme.
Watercolor on paper. Signed "T.H." by the artist and dated "'88".
