"Dutch Winter Scene, Kolf" by Jan Beerstraten, c1650 [World Golf Hall of Fame Collection]
A 17th century masterpiece. Dutch Winter Scene, Kolf c1650 by Jan Abrahamsz Beerstraten
Depicts the game of kolf being played on the ice — the direct predecessor to the modern game of golf. Being sold by the World Golf Hall of Fame, where it has been on display for many years as part of its permanent collection.
Other works by Beerstraten hang in the Louvre, Paris (The Old Port of Genes); the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Skating in Slooten, Near Amsterdam); the J. Paul Getty Museum (Winter Landscape, 1655); the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (View of the Yacht of the Princes); the National Gallery, London (The Castle of Muiden in Winter); and five works in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
One of the earliest works in this sale — and likely the only Beerstraten ever to come to private hands at this scale.
This is being consigned by the World Golf Hall of Fame, and has on display at The World Golf Hall of Fame for many years.
