For his 1977 Athlete Series, Andy Warhol created 13 large 40” x 40” original paintings of Jack Nicklaus - 7 side profile, 6 forward facing. Many are in museums or institutional collections. We sold a forward-facing Jack Nicklaus from this series at auction in 2024 for $1.1 million (and received higher offers since).
The offered painting was chosen by Warhol for the legendary debut exhibition Athletes by Andy Warhol in New York at Coe Kerr Gallery in December 1977. Warhol is photographed with this painting (next to soccer star Pele) at that 1977 Exhibition.
In our view these original Warhol Nicklaus paintings are materially undervalued — they have not followed the explosion in sports collectibles or Andy Warhol paintings. The 3 most recent Muhammad Ali sales from this same Warhol series sold for $18.1m, $15m, and $18m, respectively. Also similar in size and style as Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe; the most recent (Sage Blue) sold for $195 million.
