Offered here is the original circa 1901 artwork by Michael Brown (1854-1957) used for the 1902 Life Association of Scotland calendar. Titled Ladies Golf Championship at Aberdovey.
In 1892 the Life Association of Scotland Insurance company began to commission a series of calendars, these consisted of one specially commissioned image each year and continued until 1912, the first three being published in colour. Michael Brown a well known portrait/landscape artist was chosen for this work. Each scene was a golfing subject, always of a famous course and often including be most well known players and characters of the day.
This original Michael Brown pencil and grey wash artwork is one of only 21 original pieces of art that Michael Brown created (over a 21 year period) for the legendary Life Association calendars. Many of the other originals are owned by institutions including multiple by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club in St Andrews.
Pencil and grey wash heightened with white en grisaille on paper, with key identifying the golfers attached to the backboard. Signed by the artist on lower right.
