Original 1898 Michael Brown Artwork for 1899 Life Assoc. Calendar w/ F.G. Tait - Match at Duddingston
Offered here is the original circa 1898 artwork by Michael Brown (1854-1957) used for the 1899 Life Association of Scotland calendar. Depicts a legendary match at Duddingston involving Freddie Tait and Leslie Balfour against Ben Sayers and Willie Auchterlonie. Also pictured are legendary Musselburgh caddie "Fiery", as well as Professor Tait and many other notables of the day.
In 1892 the Life Association of Scotland Insurance company began to commission a series of calendars, these consisted of one specially commissioned image each year and continued until 1912, the first three being published in colour. Michael Brown a well known portrait/landscape artist was chosen for this work. Each scene was a golfing subject, always of a famous course and often including be most well known players and characters of the day.
This original Michael Brown pencil and grey wash artwork is one of only 21 original pieces of art that Michael Brown created (over a 21 year period) for the legendary Life Association calendars. Many of the other originals are owned by institutions including multiple by the Royal & Ancient in St Andrews.
The existence of Lieutenant F.G. (Freddie) Tait in this original 1898 artwork is significant, as the 1896 and 1898 Amateur Champ died less than 2 years later as a member of The Black Watch during the Second Boer War in South Africa. Needless to say, few pieces of original artwork from the popular Freddie Tait's life are known to exist.
Pencil and grey wash heightened with white en grisaille on paper, with key identifying the golfers attached to the backboard. Signed by the artist on lower right.
