"The Tee Shot" by Major F.P. Hopkins (Shortspoon), 1877
Scarce 1877 chromolithograph titled "The Tee Shot: The First Tee at Westward Ho!. This colored chromolithograph was produced by McLure and Macdonald (London) from an original Major F.P. Hopkins (aka Shiortspoon) painting.
Shortspoon seen 4th from left, with sketch book ready was the "brushname" of Major FP Hopkins who along with Thomas Hodge, was one of the first pictorial chroniclers of the game and its participants. All the featured players in this scene were prominent members of Westward ho! (Royal North Devon Golf Club) and crack players of their day.
Hopkins, aka Shortspoon,, did work some in oils but preferred the freedom and spontaneity of watercolour. Very few prints were published after his works. This piece, however, is not only of great value historically but also of great quality artistically from both the artists and the lithographers point of view. A very rare find.
Colored Chromolithograph.
